Case Study: Delivering Reliable Cooling for a Winter Wonderland Ice Rink

IMG-20251029-WA0004

Project Location: Milton Keynes

Application: Temporary Cooling for Winter Wonderland Ice Rink

Installation Window: 5 November – 4 January

Project Overview

A temporary ice rink in Milton Keynes formed a central attraction within a large Winter Wonderland event and required a highly reliable cooling solution to maintain ice quality throughout a busy winter season.

A temporary chiller plant was designed and deployed to support a 30m x 20m ice rink, providing consistent performance during peak visitor periods while operating within strict electrical and logistical constraints.

The Challenge

• The ice rink required continuous, stable cooling to maintain ice quality throughout the hire period.

• Equipment needed to be delivered weeks before the event opened to integrate with the wider fairground and marquee construction.

• Limited electrical capacity on site restricted the choice of equipment.

• Built in contingency was essential to avoid downtime during a high footfall public event.

Customer Requirements

• Provide sufficient cooling capacity for a 30m x 20m temporary ice rink.

• Ensure resilience and uninterrupted operation throughout the winter season.

• Select equipment compatible with the site’s restricted power supply.

• Allow performance visibility throughout the hire period.

The Solution

Two EWYT 205 chillers were supplied to deliver the required cooling duty and built in redundancy.

This dual unit configuration ensured continuous operation, even under varying loads or if unexpected issues arose.

Early delivery allowed the wider event infrastructure, marquees, fairground rides, and services, to be built around the plant without delaying commissioning.

Why This Solution Was Chosen

• The chosen chillers were the best technical fit for the available electrical capacity.

• Their proven reliability made them well suited to a high traffic public attraction.

• Redundancy across two units ensured peace of mind for the event organisers.

• Remote performance monitoring enabled oversight throughout the hire period.

Installation Details

• Building type: Temporary ice rink within Winter Wonderland

• Location: Milton Keynes

• Installation date: 5 November

• Hire period: Mid November to 4 January

• Application: Temporary cooling for ice rink refrigeration

Performance and Benefits

• Consistent ice quality maintained throughout the season.

• Built in contingency protected the rink from downtime during peak periods.

• Operational visibility through remote monitoring tools.

• Seamless integration with wider event construction thanks to early delivery.

Future Outlook

Following the success of this installation, the team has since been asked to provide a proposal for a further ice rink project for the 2026 season.

This repeat engagement reflects the client’s confidence in the reliability and performance of the temporary cooling solution delivered.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates the ability to deliver robust, flexible temporary cooling solutions for complex and time sensitive event environments.

By selecting equipment that matched site constraints and incorporating operational resilience, the team ensured reliable performance throughout a demanding winter programme.
