Refrigerants

Refrigerants – Efficient. Compliant. Low GWP.

Refrigerants play a critical role in both system performance and environmental impact. At Daikin Rental Solutions, our refrigerant strategy is aligned with the Daikin Group’s roadmap to phase out high-GWP gases and transition to eco-friendly, future-ready refrigerants in every hire unit.

What Are HVAC Refrigerants?

HVAC refrigerants are substances used within heating and cooling systems to absorb and release heat. These substances cycle between liquid and gas phases to facilitate heat exchange. Whether cooling indoor air or providing warmth, refrigerants are essential for efficient system operation.

The type of refrigerant used significantly impacts the performance, safety, and sustainability of HVAC equipment. At Daikin Rental Solutions, we understand this impact and prioritise low-GWP, high-efficiency refrigerants that align with evolving environmental regulations.

Our Approach to Refrigerants

Common Refrigerants in Our Fleet

  • R-32: A lower-GWP HFC with good energy efficiency and widespread use in air-to-water heat pumps. Significantly better than older refrigerants like R-410A.
  • R-134a: An older refrigerant still used in some applications; moderate GWP (~1430), being phased down across most systems.
  • R-1234ze: A new-generation HFO refrigerant with ultra-low GWP (~7). Used in high-efficiency chillers for commercial and industrial cooling.
  • R-454B / R-513A: Emerging alternatives with future compliance and lower environmental impact.
  • Propane (R-290): A natural refrigerant with a GWP of just 3. Exceptionally climate-friendly but highly flammable, limiting its uptake to specially designed systems. We are proud to be launching the CZ propane chiller as part of our next-generation rental fleet.

Sustainability Page

Committed to Better Refrigerants

Daikin is continually phasing out high-GWP refrigerants and introducing advanced alternatives across our rental fleet. Our goal? Help you meet your operational needs and sustainability targets.

Regulations and Global Action

Daikin Rental Solutions fully supports international efforts like the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment. We proactively upgrade our fleet to meet global and local standards, helping you remain compliant while reducing your carbon footprint.

In the UK and Europe, we are closely monitoring developments with the European F-Gas Regulations and upcoming PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) restrictions. These evolving regulations have created uncertainty across the HVAC industry in recent years. Rest assured, our team remains at the forefront of these changes to ensure our rental fleet remains compliant and future-ready.

We recommend discussing regulatory specifics with our technical team, as we continue to adapt our refrigerant strategy based on the latest legislative progress.

Future Refrigerant Innovations

We continue to monitor and integrate future refrigerant technologies such as HFOs and natural refrigerants where suitable. Our R&D and global refrigerant policy ensure Daikin stays ahead in sustainable innovation.

Daikin Group Commitment

As part of the Daikin Applied (UK) mission to lead in environmental innovation, our refrigerant approach reflects a wider global push to decarbonise HVAC systems. All new rental units are aligned with this goal and selected based on long-term sustainability and compliance.
